What should I do if my child is facing a dental emergency?

If your child has had a tooth knocked out, pushed out of place, or experienced a facial injury, those are true dental emergencies that need immediate attention. But we know it’s not always easy to tell what counts as an emergency, and that’s okay.

Whether it’s a broken tooth, swelling, or sudden pain, give us a call. We’ll help you figure out what’s going on, offer guidance over the phone, and let you know if your child needs to be seen right away or if it can wait for a regular appointment. Either way, we’re here to help you make the right next step.

Problem-Focused Exams

When issues arise, our team can perform problem-focused exams (also known as limited exams) to help address the issues. Limited exams allow us to focus on what’s hurting or injured so we can get your kiddo out of pain fast.

The Benefits of Immediate Emergency Dental Care

Stops Pain Quickly

A broken tooth, lost filling, or bad toothache hurts—and for kids, that pain feels even worse. Once we take care of the problem, your child can get back to learning, playing, and smiling happily.

Prevents Bigger Problems

With dental issues, waiting makes things worse. Getting help right away means simpler treatments, faster healing, and better outcomes for your child.

Saves Time and Money

Fixing a cracked tooth right away costs much less than waiting until it needs to be removed and replaced. When you bring your child in at the first sign of trouble, you'll save yourself time, money, and stress.

Accidents happen but quick action can make all the difference in saving a tooth. Follow these important steps:

  1. Stay Calm
Keeping the patient calm is the first priority.
  2. Handle the Tooth Carefully
Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (the white part). Avoid touching the root. If possible, place it back in the socket right away.
  3. If the Tooth Is Dirty
Rinse it gently in milk, saline, or even the patient’s saliva. Do not scrub. Then, try to reinsert it in its original position.
  4. Replant on the Spot
Encourage a parent, teacher, or another responsible adult to place the tooth back immediately, right where the accident happened.
  5. Hold It in Place
Once back in position, have the patient bite gently on gauze, a napkin, or a clean cloth to help keep the tooth secure.
  6. If Replanting Isn’t Possible
Place the tooth in a liquid medium as soon as you can. The best options (in order) are milk, HBSS (if available), saliva (spit into a cup), or saline. Water is not ideal but is better than letting the tooth dry out. Dehydration of the root begins within minutes.
  7. Bring It With You
Transport the tooth with the patient to the dental office.
  8. See a Dentist Immediately
Time is critical — get to a dentist or dental professional right away for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Collect the filling, crown, or other piece of dental work and place it in a plastic baggie. Then, call us for a same-day appointment, and make sure to bring your child’s dental work in with you. It may be possible to reattach a crown instead of completely replacing it.

A bad toothache often means your child has a deep cavity or an infection starting. You should call us for an appointment right away—these problems won't get better on their own and will only cause more pain if left untreated.

First, help them rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress if there's any swelling. Then call us for a same-day appointment. Even small chips can create tiny cracks that might lead to bigger problems later. Our dentist will check the damage and recommend the best way to fix your child's tooth and keep their smile healthy.

If it's a baby tooth that's getting wiggly on its own (with no injury), that's usually normal. Baby teeth naturally loosen before they fall out.

However, if a tooth suddenly becomes loose after a fall or injury, especially with pain or bleeding, that's different. In this case, you should call us for an appointment so we can check if the tooth can be saved or if we need to help it come out and place a space maintainer.
